Common Vegan Skincare Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Did you know that veganism started in 1988 when Dr. William Lambe and Percy Bysshe Shelley became the first Europeans to speak out against using eggs and dairy for ethical reasons? Since then, the vegan industry has evolved quite a bit, expanding into almost all areas of life.

There are certain common mistakes that newbies make when purchasing vegan skincare products. Keep reading to find out what they are so you can avoid them in your next purchase stint.

1. Don’t Think Vegan Means Cruelty-Free

Since vegan cosmetics are still pretty new to the market, you need to pay attention to the labels and ingredients. If you are concerned about your skincare products being tested on animals, then understand vegan doesn't necessarily equal cruelty-free.

Unless the product says clearly 'cruelty-free' on the packaging, it probably was tested on animals. That's why you have to become a more discerning customer and thoroughly do your research.

2. Vegan Skincare Products Can Be Synthetic or Natural

Another thing that customers forget is that just because something is vegan, doesn't mean that it's also natural. For example, you can purchase processed foods that are entirely vegan but don't have an ounce of natural product in them.

Natural means as close to nature as possible. This could be herbs or oils made from plants, etc.

Make sure you check through the ingredient list for your vegan skincare products to see what kind of ingredients they contain. You don't want something that has too many unpronounceable chemical names in it, because that will increase your body's toxic burden quite a bit, especially if you use the products every single day.

If you can choose something that is made up of a majority of natural ingredients, then that would bode well for your skin and overall health.

3. You Can Overuse Vegan Skincare as Well

Everything should be used in moderation. Just because you have purchased vegan skincare products, doesn't mean that you can't overdo it with them.

Once you purchase your vegan skincare products, make sure you give your skin a bit of time to get used to the products.

Don't switch from product to product too often. And also be careful that you don't use too much of each product, as that would be a waste of your hard-earned money.

4. A Vegan Skincare Product Budget Is Usually Higher

Since the vegan cosmetics industry is still fledgling compared to traditional cosmetics, you will find that your vegan skincare product budget will have to be higher than your traditional one.

That's okay because you are doing good for the environment and for your health by choosing vegan. But this means you have to be careful not to use two products that do the same thing at the same time.

Think about it this way. All your vegan skincare products are like a collection of chemicals and you are the chemist who needs to put them together on your skin in a way that benefits it best.

Read all the labels properly and figure out exactly what your skin needs. Don't slather useless products on your skin hoping that one of them will do the trick.

Experiment with different combinations and permutations to see what makes your skin happiest and then stick with that formula until your skin asks for something else.

5. You Still Need to Wear Sunscreen Everyday

Some folks tend to use less of the vegan skincare products either because they are so expensive (they want to save on the product) or because they assume natural means you don't need as much.

If you think the same, you are wrong on both counts.

There are certain amounts of each product that you need in order for it to be effective. For example, with sunscreen (vegan or not), you need to put a shot glass of it on the exposed areas of your body.

Just like regular sunscreen, you need to reapply every 3 hours for your vegan sunscreen to be effective. Don't get stingy with your vegan skincare products.

6. Don’t Forget About Your Diet, Sleep, and Hydration

If only there was a vegan elixir for youth and beauty. We would all be on that like white on rice.

But that's not how it works. Vegan skincare products are a great way to boost your skin health, but it's only one part of the equation.

If you eat unhealthy processed foods all the time, sleep less than 5 hours a night, and spend all your time fighting with your loved ones, then no matter how many vegan skincare products you pat on your face, your skin will still look unhealthy and lackluster.

Make sure you follow the dictates of health every single day, like:

  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water (more if you are sweating)
  • Get some movement into your routine every day
  • Do mindfulness or meditation practice to calm your mind (use soy wax candles to boost relaxation)
  • Do a self-massage (learn which oil is good for body massage here)
  • Do the best you can and forget about the rest
  • Eat natural whole foods
  • Get in a foot soak at least 2-3 times a week
  • Don't skimp on sleep - there are no side effects to sleeping

With these points in mind, you are well on your way to having that dewy beautiful complexion that you desire, and your vegan skincare products will be the icing on the cake, making it all better.
