Calendula – What is it and What Does it Do?

Calendula is commonly known as English marigold, Scotch marigold, or pot marigold, particularly in Europe. In spite of the familiar nicknames, Calendula is different from the common marigold; however, both are members of the Asteracea family, which includes chrysanthemums and daisies.

Calendula plants are edible while most marigolds are toxic to humans and animals. Petals are used in cooking, and were used as yellow coloring in cheeses and butters in centuries past. When used in stews, broths and salads, their petals add a spicy taste similar to saffron. All parts of calendula plants are useful. The plant is said to stimulate the immune system and is currently used as an ingredient in many cosmetics and skincare products. Flowers and leaves of the calendula may be dried and stored for later use. In the vegetable garden, calendula keeps aphids away from prized plants. The oils are used for treating wounds, many skin conditions and for overall good skin health. Here are some of calendula’s glowing benefits.

Promotes Healing

Calendula is primarily known as a healing plant because of its soothing properties. Although a gentle herb, the healing effects derived from calendula petals are very powerful, making it a natural first aid cream. It is beneficial for treating insect bites, bruises, blisters, cuts, and cold sores. Topical application of calendula is used to keep wounds clean and help new tissue to grow. It is often used to help poorly healing wounds and those that are exhibiting signs of tenderness, redness, or inflammation.

The healing herb is also effective in treating minor burns, including sunburn. It assists in sun protection and calendula cream, ointment, or balm may be applied to wounds to reduce swelling. Its antimicrobial components, specifically antifungal agents, can prevent secondary infections, leading to quicker healing time. The nutrients found in calendula oil gradually decreases the effect of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic skin infections.

Reduces Scarring

The calendula properties that benefit wound healing apply to the scarring process as well. Calendula increases blood flow to the injury, promotes a speedy and healthy healing process, free of infection, and encourages growth of healthy new tissue. In the cases of skin ulcers like chicken pox and acne, calendula softens and soothes skin, preventing inflammation and boosting the immune response. A recent study published in The Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care examined the effectiveness of calendula ointment on cesarean scars in 72 women. Researchers found that as compared to standard hospital treatment, those women treated with calendula ointment had a quicker healing time. They reported their incisions to be less red and swollen.

Slows Signs of Aging

The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in calendula have been found to significantly protect against oxidative stress in skin cells. Oxidative stress is an imbalance of damaging atoms and antioxidants and it plays a huge role in the aging process. Calendula allows skin to remain hydrated, healthy and moisturized. By promoting the production of collagen, an essential protein for glowing skin, the gentleness of the herb often makes calendula oil a skin care staple that can be enjoyed by even those with skin sensitivities.
